No One. That is why it is vital that the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) be reformed. Would you be shocked to find out that there may be flame retardants in the peanut butter that you give to your kids? I was. The act was passed in 1976 to regulate the thousands of chemicals in commerce but it desperately needs an overhaul because it is not protecting consumers.
Companies are not required to show that the chemicals they use in any given product are safe before they go on the market. That’s right, we assume what companies sell us is safe for our families but that is absolutely not always the case. It is unfathomable. And we wonder why there is so much disease and illness and why so many kids have issues from allergies to autism. Toxic chemicals in our environment, in our personal care products and in the food we eat lead to these problems.
The Safe Chemicals Act would reform this law and ‘require a very strong safety standard.’ That is what we need. The Environmental Working Group [EWG] is doing their best to inform the public and make changes to protect consumers.
