Celebrate Earth Day 2014 ~ 5 Things You Can Do To Be More Earth Friendly

20 million Americans held demonstrations across the country rallying for a healthy, sustainable environment on the first Earth Day in 1970 during the height of the flower child era. Earth Day founder, Gaylord Nelson, was inspired to do something after the devastation of the oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. The Earth Day Network works all year with over 22,000 partners and organizations to fight for a cleaner environment.

Lakes, rivers, trees, flowers, wild life, deep blue seas, billowy clouds, rolling green hills, the Seven Wonders and everything in between… there is a lot we can do to help keep this planet clean.

  • About 40% of landfill waste is paper. Let’s get that number down and recycle our paper! Every ton of paper we recycle, saves 17 trees, 7000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth
  • Luxuriate in a bubble bath. It takes less water to fill a tub than a 10 minute shower which can use up to 50 gallons of water
  • We Americans toss 38 billion water bottles every year. It’s sooooo easy to use reusable bottles so just do it!
  • Clean green. Use products that do not contain harmful toxins to clean your home. Far healthier for the environment and your family
We still face many of the same environmental issues as we did on that first Earth Day. Some are far worse and others, such as global warming have not brought the devastation some predicted it would at this point in time. Even small things makes a difference. What do you do to help keep the earth beautiful?

Celebrate Earth Day 2013 ~ 5 Things You Can Do To Be More Earth Friendly

Celebrate this beautiful planet we inhabit… the flowers, trees, lakes, deep seas, billowy clouds, rolling green hills, the Seven Wonders and everything in between by making a few changes that will help keep it clean.

You don’t need a PhD in environmental science to live a greener life. Some simple steps will make a difference:

Shut the lights off when you leave a room

  • Don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth
  • Purchase local food
  • Use reusable bags when you shop
  • Recycle. It’s one of the easiest things that a person can do to be more earth friendly
In his vintage news broadcast covering the first Earth Day, Walter Conkrite sites  environmental issues we still face today. Some are worse and others, such as global warming have not brought the devastation some predicted it would at this point in time.
Many scientists believe global warming is a myth, that the earth experiences natural climate changes regardless of human impact. What is your opinion on the subject?
As this video states, even the tiniest things matter. What small things do you do to help make a difference?

When In Doubt, Recycle

20130215_102100Our trash bin is rarely full but our recycle bin is busting at the seams nearly every week. I’m always asking my neighbor if I can put our overflow of recyclables in his bin. Most people don’t realize that lots of stuff that we toss in the garbage can be recycled.  They just throw things away because they either assume it cannot be recycled or they just don’t bother. In fact, more than 75 % of waste is recyclable, but only about 30 % of it actually gets recycled!

Glass jars, newspaper, magazines, cardboard, cans, some of this stuff is obvious but people still neglect to fill their recycle bins each week. Someone once told me that they don’t recycle because there is no room for a bin under their kitchen sink. Seriously?!! Make room. The mud room, the laundry room, the bathroom, garage anywhere!  Recycling is probably the easiest thing that a person can do to live a greener existence.

Even that clear, hard plastic packaging used for toys and other goods can be recycled as can shipping boxes, department store bags, tissue paper and some types of wrapping paper. Milk cartons and those liquid cartons that contain juice, egg nog and broth can be recycled as well. Those containers have a high grade fiber so they work well in paper mills.

My kids and I went on a tour of our local landfill. Not exactly a trip to Legoland but it was interesting, the boys had fun and we learned a lot. Our guide told us, when in doubt, recycle. She said if you’re not sure whether or not an item is recyclable throw it in the recycle bin because they sort through everything anyway. Not every municipality is run the same but you can call yours with questions. Certain items like tires, electronics, carpeting, appliances, paint, etc. are not always easy to recycle because you usually have to find a drop off center but it can be done, just go online for information on your area. Just do what you can, every little bit helps.

“We can help educate our families and communities about the importance of recycling for our environment, and how each of us can make a difference for a better world by recycling”
-Robert Alan Silverstein
