Can We talk?! Oh Grow Up! Remembering The Indomitable Joan Rivers

Fearless, groundbreaking… she was a force to be reckoned with, a pioneer who blazed trails and shattered comedy’s glass ceiling paving the way for female comics. Her energy and talent was unparalleled. She stayed on top & remained relevant her entire career. Loved that woman!

Joan Rivers has been making me laugh all my life. I watched her on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson when I was a little girl and have been a fan ever since.

My very funny friend, Greg and I use to hang out and listen to her comedy albums. He got me the coolest gift, a ‘Can We Talk’ t-shirt that I loved. Wish I still had that shirt! I wore it when he and I went to see her perform live at a club on the Sunset Strip. We were close enough to the stage that she saw I was wearing it! What a performer, I’ll never forget that night. Fond memories.

She told an interviewer,”I succeeded by saying what everyone else was thinking,” it’s true. There were many reasons to love Joan Rivers; her delivery, hilarious one liners, biting zingers, her quick razor sharp wit… she was one of a kind.

She may have been brash on stage but those close to her say she was, soft, kind, incredibly caring and supportive. My sister was on her reality show, said she was a lovely person. She didn’t just make us laugh, she had poignant words of wisdom for us all. If you get a chance, catch her documentary, “A Piece of Work.”

It’s sort of surprising that we are shocked by the death of an 81 year old but she was far younger than her years. She was vivacious and had more energy than some people I know who are half her age. A life force who never slowed down. Her career was still on fire because she was a true talent and an extremely savvy business woman.

She would want us to be laughing so here’s a clip of one of her routines that will make us do just that…

She lived life to the fullest and had a ball. In a recent episode of their reality show, she told her daughter, Melissa, “life is so much fun, it’s one big movie… how lucky we are, every minute… this has been my life.”As much as she loved performing and working, it is clear that her family was the most important part of her life. My heart goes out to Melissa, Cooper and the rest of her family and close friends.

In her 2012 book I Hate Everyone…Starting with Me, the beloved star wrote “When I die (and yes, Melissa, that day will come; and yes, Melissa, everything’s in your name,) I want my funeral to be a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action,” it’s reported that this Sunday, she will have just that.

I will miss her unique way of entertaining the world. What a legacy she has left. She left us wanting more… may the queen of comedy rest in peace ♥

In honor of her brilliant humor, a few of her great one liners…

“The old rules are the good rules, you marry for money. You can always fake orgasms, you can’t fake a rent check.”

“I have a great sex life but I wish I had a partner”

“Style is something you have or you don’t, you cannot steal it from anybody like a husband. You’ve either got it or you don’t'” (referring to Angelina Jolie!)

“I don’t exercise, if God wanted me to exercise, he’d put diamonds on the floor”

“By the way, don’t swallow sperm; 148 calories a swallow, New York Times. Or if you’re on Weight Watcher’s, 2 points”
