Learn The Facts & Take A Stand Against Child Abuse & Neglect

5 children a day die from child abuse and neglect in this country #FiveTooMany. 80% of those children are under the age of 4. Sadly, that number is growing, 15 years ago it was 3 children a day.

What’s worse is that there are actually 3 times more children than that being killed at the hands of their abuser because this statistic does not account for all of the cases that go unrecorded.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

There are several organizations working hard to help children. Child Help has been dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect and helping its victims since 1959 . The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children provides necessary resources and information to parents, victims and law enforcement.

PROTECT is a national association providing political strength and leadership for the protection of abused, exploited, and neglected children. Your time or financial assistance will be put to good use with any of these organizations.

It is estimated that there are 3 times more incidents of child abuse than the 3.3 million cases reported each year

Writing this post was difficult. The images I saw and the stories I read about innocent little children who need love and nurturing but get instead get brutalized moved me to tears.

  • Approximately 60% of child fatalities that are caused by mistreatment are not listed as such on their death certificates
  • Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime
  • About 80% of 21 year olds that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder
  • Up to two-thirds of people being treated for drug abuse report being neglected or abused when they were children
  • More than 90% of victims are acquainted with their abuser in some way
  • The vicious cycle of abuse continues as about 30% of those abused and neglected will go on to abuse their own children

Read All About It ~ 7 Articles Worth Reading

Essential Reading

Monsanto’s Roundup Herbicide Linked to Autism, Parkinson’s, Cancer The activate ingredient used in Roundup has been found to be highly toxic in a new study. This stuff is used on fields where our kids play sports, on fields at our children’s schools and the parks where they play. What’s it doing to their little systems? Nothing good.

This is rather shocking. A must read for all women, this chemical is found in most cosmetics and personal care products Study: BPA, Methylparaben Block Breast Cancer Drugs “researchers took noncancerous breast cells from high-risk patients, grew them in a lab and found that once the cells were exposed to BPA and methylparaben, they started behaving like cancer cells… and, the combination of chemicals rendered tamoxifin ineffective.”  Avoid the ingredient by choosing safer products.

This is frightening but it makes sense. Infant Anaphylaxis: The Importance of Early Recognition  Toxins found in synthetic fragrances used in laundry detergent, fabric softener, body wash, shampoo, lotions, diaper wipes, disposable diapers, air fresheners, candles, etc. are thought to be a PRIMARY CAUSE OF SIDS. The good news is that it is avoidable – only use non-toxic products that do NOT contain any synthetic fragrance. You can find a great line of non-toxic products here.

Autoimmune diseases are the cause of many horrible health problems that go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Many doctors erroneously attribute the symptoms to other illnesses so people do not get better. This article, 10 Signs You Have an Autoimmune Disease and How to Reverse It by Dr. Amy Myers sheds some light and offers good advice.

Protect Your Child From A Predator It’s a sick and sad reality so we need to know how to keep our kids safe by teaching them and empowering them with the right tools to make good decisions when it comes to stranger danger.

A Powerful Union: OB_GYNs and Chemical Policy Reform “Why are OB-GYNs speaking out about the dangers of chemicals in our everyday environment and urging providers to educate their patients about it? Because they now know too much to stay quiet.”

Wanna lose weight, have better skin, bigger boobs, a flatter stomach? Just get photoshopped. Check out these before & after shots on Imgur. It perpetuates the problem girls, women and frankly plenty of guys have body distortion and comparing themselves to unrealistic standards. I’ve heard many a celebrity say, “I don’t even look like that!” Hours of hair and make up, great lighting and retouching is how it’s done. So don’t compare yourself!

Cell Phone Use And Radiation ~ Should We Be Concerned? Part II

More and more studies are discovering links between cell phone use and tumors. Part I of this article was published last week, you can read it here. As I stated in that post, scientists at the World Health Organization [WHO] conducted a world wide study revealing that just 30 minutes a day of cell phone use for 10 years increased the risk of a rare brain tumor by 40%. This is of particular concern for children because they absorb 10 times the amount of radiation as an adult. Some countries ban children from using cell phones because of the health risk.

Distracted driving isn’t the only reason using a cell phone in the car is dangerous. According to the Research Center for Wireless Technology, when you use a cell phone in the car, the reflective properties of the car’s metal chassis and frame increases the radiation exposure exponentially to everyone in the car, not just the person using the phone. This also occurs inside buses, motor homes and elevators.

The health risks that cell phones potentially cause is an ongoing concern, one that needs more research. We are still using cell phone radiation safety standards that were put in place 17 years ago! The FCC is FINALLY reevaluating them and the Environmental Working Group has launched a campaign to make sure it gets done! Love that EWG! In the mean time, there are steps we can take to keep ourselves safer and limit exposure to cell phone radiation:

  • Use the speaker phone when possible
  • Only make calls when necessary and keep them short
  • Turn the phone off if it’s in your pocket
  • Wear an air tube headset – avoid wireless headsets, they intensify radiation to the ear canal
  • Allow children to use a cell phone only for emergencies
  • If you must use the phone in the car, make sure a window is open

Remember, there was a time when cigarettes were believed to be harmless. Considering what we now know about cigarettes it’s shocking to think that women actually smoked while they were pregnant. It will be interesting to see what we learn about cell phone use in the coming years. Forward this and part I of this article to your friends, anyone who uses a cell phone should be aware of the risks, especially those who have given cell phones to their children.

Cell Phone Use And Radiation ~ Should We Be Concerned? Part I

Who among us doesn’t rely on our cell phones every single day? I was charging mine the other day, nearly forgot it as I was running out of the house and the thought occurred to me, how did we ever live without these things?! But how much radiation are we really being exposed to?

A report released from the Environmental Health Trust [EHT] says that governmental testing of cell phone radiation is highly inaccurate. “Unsurprising, biased and misleading,” is what EHT President, cancer epidemiologist, Devra Davis, PhD, MPHT says about a recent Danish study that underplayed the cancer risk from cell phone use.

The tests conducted by the Federal Communication Commission [FCC] are based on old science, old cell phone models and they do not take into consideration the increase of current cell phone use. Their tests are done on mannequins emulating a 220 pound man who is 6’2″ tall, this does not represent most of the population.

Not too worried about yourself? Think twice when it comes to your kids’ cell phone use. Children absorb radiation at a far higher rate than adults. Radiation goes 150% deeper into the head of a 10 year old child than it does an adult’s head; radiation goes even deeper into that of a 5 year old.

One study shows that the bone marrow of a child absorbs 10 times the amount of radiation as an adult. The radiation “limits” allowed by governmental studies pertain to adult men not children. It’s cause for concern, particularly for kids who have their own cell phone or for kids who frequently use their parent’s cell phones for games and web surfing. EHT points out that some countries ban children from using cell phones because of the health risk.

Scientists at the World Health Organization [WHO] believe that cell phones are carcinogenic. ABC News reported that WHO conducted a world wide study revealing that just 30 minutes a day of cell phone use for 10 years increased the risk of a rare brain tumor by 40%.

Be sure to check out part II is this series which includes cell phone safety tips.

Healthy Child Healthy World… When Did You Wake up?

urlHealthy Child Healthy World is a valuable resource for creating a healthy, safe home and life. Thanks to them, millions are waking up to the risks that toxic chemicals pose. James and Nancy Chuda founded this wonderful organization after learning that the cancer that ended the life of their 4 year old daughter was most likely caused by a pesticide that Nancy was exposed to during her pregnancy.

Part of their mission is to bring awareness of toxic risks to parents and to encourage healthier lifestyle choices. I am extremely impressed by this organization, the work they do is so important. I am passionate about living a healthy, toxic-free lifestyle so I love how they have truly empowered and enlightened the public and helped change things for the better. But it’s an ongoing uphill battle, this short video will give you an idea of what they are trying to accomplish. I hope you’ll join me in spreading the word by tweeting this, posting it on your Facebook wall and sending it to your friends and family.

I woke up about 7 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest. I hit the snooze button at first but I’m wide awake now. When did you wake up?
