5 Ways to Green Your Beauty Routine

A few simple changes can make a positive impact

86525535-300x200What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in our bodies. The skin is the body’s largest organ; it absorbs up to 60 percent of what we put on it. Most women use an average of up to 20 personal care items every day and the ingredients in those products go straight to our bloodstream. Treat the earth and yourself a little kinder with these five natural tips to be a greener glamour girl.

1. Know Your Ingredients
Many are carcinogenic, others adversely affect our reproductive systems, and some disrupt our endocrine systems. The cosmetic industry is not regulated, so companies are not required to disclose ingredients. Safety testing is left to the manufacturers, so they can use nearly anything they want in their formulations. The European Union bans over 1300 cosmetic ingredients. The U.S. has banned only 11. If you are curious about whether or not your favorite cosmetics contain toxic chemicals, a good resource is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Data Base. They rate the safety of several products. Ava Anderson Non Toxic has great products and the whole line is pure and non toxic.

2. Screen Your Sunscreen

Most dermatologists agree that the number one anti-aging secret is protecting your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. However, like cosmetics, most sunscreens have harmful chemicals as well. Steer clear of sunscreen that contains ingredients like… Read entire article at Parent Society.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase” -Dr. Martin Luther King

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”  King gave his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial in August, 1963, to a group of civil rights supporters at the March on Washington. He was the first black American to receive Time magazine’s Man of the Year honor in 1964, he also won the Nobel Peace Prize that same year. He was the youngest to win the award, upon receiving it, he announced that he would use the prize money to further the civil rights cause. King was instrumental in desegregating buses in Montgomery, Alabama in the mid-1950s. He helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and served as its first president in 1957.

King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia

This inspirational man who led the civil rights movement championing the cause to end segregation and fight racial discrimination is the first and only U.S. Citizen to have a national holiday named after him. He graduated high school at the age of 15, received a B.A. from Morehouse College in 1948 and attended Boston University where he received his Ph.D. in systematic theology in 1955. In 1960, he followed in the family footsteps and became pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. It is believed that he said he would not live to 40. Sadly, King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee in April of 1968 at the age of 39.

“Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last” -Dr. Martin Luther King

Shake Your Tail Feather With BassBuds Earphones

Music makes the world go round, it's a necessity in life. It adds a fun vibe to whatever you're doing and just makes life happier. My taste is rather eclectic, you'll find all types of music on my iPod. Getting my groove on makes workout sessions, house cleaning and cooking dinner far more tolerable. My iPod is one of my prized possessions. When it's not blasting music from the dock, having the right ear phones is a must.reviews

I was given the opportunity to try out BassBuds high performance in ear headphones and became an instant fan. They work very well, the advanced chrystaltronics sound technology offers great quality, very clear. They have a hands free mic and MP3 controller. In Memoriam

2012 was a difficult year for many people. It seems nearly everyone I know was touched by some type of loss or illness. We unfortunately suffered a tragic loss in our family. I haven’t yet written about it but the last few months of 2012 were not easy. A devastating accident took the life of my beautiful mother-in-law, Diane Bonanno.

Diane Valerie Bonanno
September 11, 1938 – November 19, 2012

While on vacation with my father-in-law in one of her favorite places, Hawaii, a huge wave about 15 feet high slammed her to the ground, shattering her neck. This very active woman, young for her years who hiked and did yoga was, in an instant, a quadriplegic.

The next 3 and a half weeks were difficult and scary. We prayed for miracles. She fought hard, her will to live was strong but after many complications, she passed away just before Thanksgiving. My husband lost his mom. The outpouring of support and prayers from friends during this ordeal was overwhelming. We had a beautiful service for her just before Christmas. My husband, his father, sister and both brothers spoke from their heart, it was exactly what I think she would have wanted.

I am blessed to have known her. She was a beautiful person inside and out… kind, generous, thoughtful, spiritual, loving. Diane was a wonderful mother and an amazing grandmother who had a special relationship with each of her 10 grandchildren. She was full of love and helped people her entire life, always giving of her time and talents.

The medical staff in both hospitals said she was special. They rarely see so much love and support from families and visitors. They appreciated how kind and polite she was. Her behavior was a  pleasant surprise for them as they expressed to the family how rare it is for patients in her condition to even smile. Another testament to her generous and loving spirit.

I loved being her daughter-in-law. We were very close and fortunately had none of the typical issues most women have with their mother-in-law. I could really talk to her and be myself, I always felt like she ‘got me’. I’m lucky we bought our home when we did because some of my last memories of her are how much fun we had shopping for new items for our home and decorating it together. My father-in-law said it best at her service, “all of my 3 sons are mamas boys and their wives still love her!” She loved deeply and everyone felt her love.  A light in our lives dimmed way too soon.

Galations 5:22-28

“The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Savvy Suburban Has Been Featured on The Sunday Sip!

Janene and Christine at More Than Mommies have featured Savvy Suburban along with some other great blogs this week on the Sunday Sip Rewind edition! They interviewed me earlier this year and I’m so happy that they have asked to catch up with me again. One of the best things about blogging is connecting with other bloggers. Janene and Christine are 2 girls that I am honestly happy to have ‘met’ in the cyber world. They each have 4 children, yes, 4! So motherhood is clearly a huge part of their lives but their blog also focuses on being much more. If you’d like to learn a little more about me, check out the original interview at More Than Mommies and tell them I say “hi!” If you are more than a mommy (and we all are!), they may want to feature you and your blog in the new year!
