Prevention Is Key When It Comes To Keeping Your Beautiful Breasts Healthy

15 Things You Can Do To PREVENT Breast Cancer

Only 10% of all cancers are genetic, even breast cancer is not usually caused by a genetic predisposition. A mere 15% of breast cancer patients actually have a family history. We must look at lifestyle habits in order to prevent this terrible disease ~ what we are eating, breathing and what we are putting on our skin.

  • Eat less red meat. A study published in the BMJ that followed 89, over a 20 year period revealed that women who had an average of 1.5 servings of red meat each day had a 22% higher chance of breast cancer over women who limited their red meat intake to once a week. With each addition daily serving of red meat, the risk appeared to increase by 13%
  • Avoid parabens. You know how I feel about parabens if you’ve been reading my blog for a while. Use cosmetics and sunscreen that are formulated without them because parabens mimic the body’s natural hormones increasing the risk of breast and other cancers. They are found in 99% of breast cancer tissue samples.
  • Hit the gym, lace up those running shoes , pop in a work out DVD – choose some type of physical activity because just 30 minutes of exercise each day reduces your chance of getting breast cancer. Plus exercise boosts t-cells that help your immune system work at full capacity
  • Stay at a healthy weight. Exercise also helps keep your body fat percentage in check. Too much fat on our bodies creates hormones, particularly estrogen, which has been found to stimulate cancer
  • Garlic, turmeric and cruciferous vegetables including brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and bok choy are good breast cancer fighters because they bind estrogen in your GI tract
  • A study showed that drinking 3 cups of green tea a day can reduce risk of breast cancer by 50%

Survival rates are at an all-time high for those with breast cancer. In the last 20 years, there has been a 30% reduction in mortality and over 90% of breast cancer patients survive after 5 years with early diagnosis.

  • Steer clear of Bisphenol A. I have written about the dangers of BPA in several posts. It’s found in everything from plastic containers to the lining of canned foods to cash register reciepts. BPA is problematic because it imitates estrogen so it disrupts our endocrine system and messes with hormones. It’s been associated with many cancers including breast cancer
  • Choose lean protein. Replace those red meat meals with nuts, beans, organic chicken and low mercury fish such as wild caught salmon
  • Pesticides can also affect the way your hormones react so buy organic when possible, use green cleaning products and stay away from hand sanitizers & soaps containing the endocrine disruptor triclosan. This cousin to agent orange is classified as a pesticide
  • Ask your doctor about taking the active form of vitamin D3 with K, 1000 iu’s a day may slash your risk of breast cancer up to 50%

Approximately 20 – 30% of breast cancers recur. The most common places it metastasizes are the bone, lungs, liver and brain

  • logo - CopyHER-2 is a rare but aggressive form of the disease. Another study found that eating lots of raw salad veggies dropped the risk of developing it by close to 35%
  • Curb your alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day. Studies show that over imbibing on a regular basis increases the risk factor
  • Breastfeed. It’s been shown to lower risk and it boosts infants health and immune system
  • Know your family history. While Only 15% of breast cancer patients  have a family history, if you do, your risk is higher so you need to know and take precautions
  • Get screened. Early detection is the key. Be sure to conduct monthly self exams and seek proper screening based on your age group and family history. You may need an ultrasound or sonogram in addition to a mammogram. The most effective type of mammography is the Genius 3D which has been found to detect 41% more invasive cancers and is proven to detect cancer 15 months earlier. Tell your doctor you’d like that one, it’s available in every state.
  • This is a bonus tip but perhaps one of the most important: For the love of all that’s good in the world, DITCH THE TOXIC DEODORANT & ANTIPERSPIRANT! Parabens and Aluminum have been found in breast cancer tissue. Want a safe, healthy alternative that actually works ALL day and night? You’ll find it here.                                                                                                                                                                                 *Please share this info ~ Tweet this, post on FB & Google+, Pin it & forward to all the women and men in your life, yes, men can get breast cancer too*

It is beyond time to put a stop to all the abhorrent Pinkwashing that goes on every October. Raising awareness for breast cancer research and prevention is important, I applaud companies that raise real funds. HOWEVER, isn’t it horrendously hypocritical of certain companies to sell products with ingredients that have been shown to CAUSE BREAST CANCER?!12038271_10153703383370982_5382164450670151028_n

Everywhere you turn in October companies are Pinkwashing us by claiming to be in support of breast cancer research while using ingredients that are mammary carcinogens, or carcinogenic contaminants that behave as endocrine disrupting compounds in our bodies, causing hormonal imbalance. As the Gerson Institute calls it, ‘carcinogens for the cure.’ True that.

“Pinkwashing – verb 1. the sale of items containing known carcinogens, while marketing these products in support of breast cancer awareness 2. also, capitalizing on the promotion of breast cancer prevention when only concerned about bottom line profit margin.”

It’s said that Evelyn Lauder’s dream was to end breast cancer. Why doesn’t the company jump off the breast cancer awareness bandwagon and honor her memory by reformulating their products WITHOUT harmful cancer causing ingredients?! L’Oreal, Proctor & Gamble and many others do it too. How do they sleep at night?!

According to the Breast Cancer Fund, which is doing amazing work in the name of prevention, “thousands of chemicals linked to breast cancer in scientific studies.”

Avon’s part in all of this is perplexing. They raise millions with their walk, have created a “Center of Excellence” in breast care and claim the mission of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Care Program at San Francisco General Hospital is to ‘provide comprehensive breast care, education and research in a compassionate and culturally sensitive environment.’

WHY, then, do their products contain MANY known CARCINOGENS??!!  The Avon 2 in 1 Cleanser is a NINE on the EWG database & has TEN carcinogens. Fucking insane.

Interested in a site that actually helps patients? Various companies offer patients free items such as scarves, make up, house cleaning, hats, wigs, etc. Breast cancer survivor Bethany Kandell created Breatcancerfreebies.com where patients can go to find items they can receive. You can make a donation on the site as well.

Healthy Bites ~ 5 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Health

“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear” ~Buddha

  • Want another good reason to pile your plate with veggies? It boosts your mood! Alphalinolenic acid ALA, found in plant based foods has been found to diminish an inflammatory compound linked to depression. Dr. Oz reported that a study found those who skipped meat but ate a lot of vegetables were happier than those who did the reverse. No need to go vegan to reap benefits, just add several veggies to your diet. It wouldn’t hurt to cut back on your meat intake
  • Steer clear of products containing aluminum. Research on aluminum shows links to Alzheimer’s and other diseases so it’s a good idea to limit exposure. Switch to an aluminum free deodorant, don’t take antacids containing aluminum and check the levels in your drinking water. A study done by French scientists found an increased risk of Alzheimer’s in regions that have higher levels of aluminum in the water supply
  • Kick that soda habit. You know it’s devoid of any nutritious value and full of unhealthy ingredients. A study at University of California, San Francisco found those who drink 20 oz. or more each day have shorter telomeres. Telomeres are the small cap at the end of your chromosomes that protect your DNA. Scientists gauge cellular aging with them. A few years ago good friend, Jamie, wasn’t feeling her best so I suggested she kick her soda addiction. She did and feels tons better!
  • Run, power walk, hit the gym! Looking hot in a bikini is a priority for us girls but the most important reason to stay fit? It fights disease. “You name a disease, cancer, diabetes there is a study of how obesity increases the odds” ~World Factualy
  • Suffer from migraines or chronic headaches? It just might be a food sensitivity that is causing it. Studies also show that deficiencies in magnesium and/or vitamin B can cause migraines. Dr. Oz says that raw ginger & fever few tea help relieve migraines

Testimonials

I signed up for the course to educate myself on how to make smarter choices about the products I use on myself and my family. Prior to taking the class, I was frustrated with all of the misleading information out there. There are many products I was using that claimed they were ‘clean’ when in fact they were green washed. The class taught me how to outsmart this type of marketing and purchase safer products by providing me with an understanding of the specific chemicals to avoid. I can now look at the back of a label and recognize these harmful chemicals. As a registered nurse, I found value in her application of the endocrine system because it emphasized just how these chemicals can be dangerous to our bodies. Kelly helped me gain a much better understanding of clean products, how to protect myself and my family, and inspired me to spread the word. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to create a healthier lifestyle. Since taking it, I have switched over many products I was using and now feel so much better about putting them on my kids knowing they are clean.

~Shannon E., Pediatric ICU Nurse & mom of 2

Even if you think you are a well-informed, up to date or a life long health and wellness zealot you will learn something new and informative from Kelly Bonanno’s ‘The Savvy Girl’s Guide To Organic Beauty.’ This is an eye-opening course exploring and breaking down the safest and most toxic products, ingredients, formulas and chemicals found in the everyday products. Kelly cuts to the chase and takes the confusion out of our beauty, household and health related consumer products in a clear, concise manner. I guarantee you will learn something you didn’t know before. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it.

~Eva S., Creative Director/Writer/Producer

“I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your talk during the wellness event on Friday! You are SUCH an amazing speaker!! Because of you, I went out and bought healthier deodorant and am committed to buying less-toxic household cleaners, lotion, and shampoo/conditioner next time I run out! I will DEFINITELY keep my ear to the ground for businesses that might be interested in a workshop!!” ~Courtney L., Keller Williams

I was struggling with allergic reactions on my skin caused by something in the products I was using. During the course, I learned how toxic everyday cosmetics and cleaning products can be. One thing that I liked was learning specifically which products I was using that could be causing my skin rashes. Overall, I found the experience very educational and helpful. It raised my awareness of products that I should avoid. I am better because I was able to use alternative products that Kelly recommended, thus avoiding the products that were causing the skin rash. Now I feel great and my skin has cleared up. I no longer have to rely on harmful steroid prescription ointments to relieve the skin rashes. Kelly, thank you so much for solving this aggravating problem with your knowledge of the harmful ingredients in everyday cosmetics and household cleaning products!

~Tracy D., Founder, Tracy Naturals

“Gaining knowledge of, what is harmful to myself and those I love, then avoiding it as much as possible. Following people like you, who put in the time and effort to know what is harmful and how to recognize it for ourselves, is a huge asset. It’s a daunting task!! I appreciate all you do. Thank you. ??”

~Karen A., member of Savvy Girl’s Organic World

Kelly’s course should be on the ‘must do’ list for anyone looking for a place to begin their journey to wellness by adopting a non-toxic lifestyle. I came into the course with a fair amount of knowledge about a toxin free lifestyle, but this course took me to a new level of understanding and awareness about the issue in all areas of my life. Kelly’s passion is real, her delivery is upbeat, and the information she imparts can be life changing. Not only does ‘The Savvy Girl’s Guide To Organic Beauty’ provide valuable information on the bad stuff, it provides an impressive list of alternative product choices to help you get a quick start on going non-toxic! Kelly has done the work for you and will even offer you concierge service to help you create a plan to eliminate the unsafe chemicals from your home. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and sign up for this course!

~Tamra G., Owner, The Studio of Tamra Glaser & mom of 2

“Kelly, thank you so so much for today! You were amazing and gave us all so much great information. My Aunt Diane just texted me that she ordered some 100% Pure products and that she is noticing a lot of her products have “fragrance” and other toxins. Today couldn’t have been more perfect. I’ve received so much positive response from the event. I truly can’t thank you enough!” ~Cassy N., mom of 2

I signed up for this course because I was struggling with knowing which products were truly pure and organic. Kelly taught me which ingredients to avoid and why. I feel so empowered now!

~Marianna S., Mom of 4

Transform your health with the power and peace of mind of an eco friendly lifestyle.

I help busy women who want to go green, clean their beauty routine, get toxins away from their kids, reduce their body’s toxic burden, have glowing skin & more energy but are pressed for time and feel overwhelmed by the thought of one more thing to do!

Are you wondering whether or not I can help you? If you are in one of the following situations, then the answer is a resounding yes! Contact me if any of these scenarios sound familiar:

Melissa is pregnant for the first time and beginning realizing that the products she uses in her home to clean her house are highly toxic, She is afraid of exposing her unborn child and does not want him living in a toxic environment after he arrives.

Pam is a stay-at-home-mom who has been so focused on raising her children and keeping up with the demands of an extremely busy lifestyle that she has put less attention on herself and now she doesn’t feel very good about herself. She’s finally at a place where she’s ready to make a change. She wants to get the toxins away from her kids. She wants to feel better, look better and have more energy but does not want to use products with toxins because she has read about the adverse health affects.

Michelle is overwhelmed. She knows there are toxins in most everyday products and realizes that she should make some changes but she just doesn’t know where to start. She’s not sure about what products to use. She needs guidance from me to alleviate the overwhelm of going green and living eco friendly.

Alexis is a 30 something career woman who is beautiful, loves make up, gets her hair done and colored but she’s also pretty health minded and has concerns about the products she’s using on her body and her hair. She wants to clean them up at least a little bit but she doesn’t want to give up glamour. She’s a make up junkie, a product junkie who likes to look hot, sexy and beautiful.

Sandra is resistant to change. She is not onboard but is curious. She likes the products she is using but wants a healthy routine so she’d like to explore some options about potentially making a few switches. She doesn’t want to go all out changing every single one of her personal care, beauty products or household products, she just wants to dip her toe in, learn more and take baby steps by making a few small changes.

Danielle is a savvy woman. She knows conventional products have a harmful ingredients but she wonders just how clean her products really are. She’s heard of greenwashing and she’s concerned that perhaps her products are not as clean as the companies claim. She wants to make sure that the products she uses from this point forward are truly green, clean and healthy. She wants to ditch anything but claims to be safe and organic but actually has harmful chemicals.

Cassandra is a cancer survivor. She’s a strong woman. She has she beat it and she wants to change her lifestyle habits and live as clean and healthy as possible. She realizes that her illness was not her fault but she also realizes that only 10% of cancers are genetic. She knows our environment and our products can harm us and she wants to do everything she can and her power to stay healthy.
