10 Actionable Tips To Go Green For Earth Day & Every Day 🌎

Happy Earth Day

50 years ago today, 20 million Americans held demonstrations across the country rallying for a healthy, sustainable environment. We still face many of the same environmental issues as we did on that first Earth Day when founder, Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin Senator at the time, was inspired to make a difference after the devastation of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, a beautiful coastal town here in Southern California not far from where I live.

“What’s the use of a fine house if you haven’t got a tolerable home planet to put it on?”

~Henry David Thoreau

The hippie chick inside this eco advocate considers every day Earth Day. The theme this year is “Invest In Our Planet.” As a Wellness & Life Coach for people who are divorced or going through the process, I love helping them detox their relationships, environment and mindset so they can make their next chapter their best chapter ~ these tips will help you detox your environment.

Celebrate Earth Day by connecting with your inner flower child and take action by implementing as many of these eco-friendly habits as possible:

  • Green Your Beauty Routine This is good for the planet and it will reduce your toxic load which is super healthy for you. Click here for tips to make it easy.
  • Conserve Energy Shut lights off when you leave a room, use energy efficient light bulbs in all your fixures, and reduce phantom energy drains by unplugging electronics when they’re not in use. This will save you money too.
  • Drive Less, Bike & Walk Way More Wonderful for the environment, your wallet and your waistline.
  • Detox Your Home Occupy your time during lockdown by creating a healthier, less toxic home. You are currently spending more time inside your home than ever. The environment inside your home is up to TEN TIMES more polluted than it is outside. I cannot impress upon you enough how important it is to create a less toxic home. Environmental toxins impair your immune system and wreak havoc on your health. I know it’s daunting and overwhelming, that’s exactly why I created my easy workshop-style course:  The Home Detox Masterclass will remove the overwhelm, save you an abundance of time and you will avoid the hassle of being greenwashed. This makes it easy for you to learn the steps you need to clean up your indoor environment, reduce your toxic load, and minimize your carbon footprint. Tell a friend.) Imagine how relieved you’ll be when you know exactly what to do and what to use. What better way to celebrate Earth Day?!  Click here to learn more & register.

The EPA ranks indoor air pollution one of the top five environmental health risks

  • Burning Clean Candles Paraffin candles emit toxic chemicals such as benzene, toulene, and keytones into the air and many wicks contain heavy metals. Soy and palm oil candles are hydrogenated and often contain paraffin. Soy can be a safe option if it’s non GMO. Beeswax and coconut wax are clean, safe options.
  • Compost Like An Eco Boss  This seems like a rather big project but it’s actually not. You just need to get it set up. It turns food scraps into a rich additive for soil that helps plants thrive but if it’s not done right it can be a smelly mess. Learn how with Master gardener, Stacey Murphy. You’ll also find helpful tips at The Spruce. If gardening is a form of your self-care, you’ll like composting. After a few weeks you’ll have crumbly compost for your lawn and garden. Many cities even provide you with a free composting bin which certainly makes it far easier. Check with your municipality to find out if they offer that service.
  • Eat Less Meat Livestock production emits more greenhouse gas and uses a huge amount of land and water. In his enlightening book, Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet–One Bite at a Time, Dr. Mark Hyman, Chairman, Institute for functional medicine, says that our food system is the number one cause of climate change. Loss of soil, factory farming of animals, processing and food waste are some of the contributing factors.

  • Shop local And Shop Consciously  Buy less, recycle more, upcycle and seek businesses that are environmentally focused.

If you are concerned about climate change, make some eco friendly changes in your own home. What’s going on in your home affects the earth.

It starts with you.

  • Clean Hair Care Is Best For Humans and Mother Nature Make the switch to clean, non toxic hair care. Americans poor hundreds of millions of gallons of shampoo down the drain each year. The waste water treatment plants in this country are designed to remove bacteria but not toxic chemicals so that contamination can end up back into our water supply. Using clean beauty and personal care products is very beneficial to your health as well as the planet.
  • Plant A Beautiful Tree This is a great thing to do with your family while you’re in lockdown. Even one tree has a positive impact on the earth. They absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen into the atmosphere, help regulate the water cycle and provide food and habitat for wildlife and humans.

Environmental toxins found in homes account for an estimated 75%-80% of cancer cases and deaths in the US.

World Water Day 2022: 5 Simple Steps You Can Take To Conserve Water & Help Alleviate The Global Water Crisis

We luxuriate in bubble baths, enjoy hot showers, swim in our pools, wash our cars, water our house plants, clean our dishes and clothes, drench our lawns, gulp our 8 glasses all without much thought. Water is probably the resource that is most taken for granted because it seems so abundant but it’s really not.

We can’t live without it yet there are currently about 844 million people on this planet who do not have access to safe, clean water in their home.

World Water Day is about bringing awareness to this global crisis and supporting those suffering every single day deprived of clean water and adequate sanitation.

A child dies every 20 seconds from a water-related illness.

90% of the nearly 2 million deaths caused by diarrheal diseases each year from lack of proper sanitation are in children under the age of 5. Truly heartbreaking.

It’s a problem even here in the United States, 8% of us do not have access to clean drinking water. The issue needs awareness but like all serious issues, we need to take action and do our part to alleviate the problem today and every day.

“The crisis of our diminishing water resources is just as severe (if less obviously immediate) as any wartime crisis we have ever faced. Our survival is just as much at stake as it was at the time of Pearl Harbor, or the Argonne, or Gettysburg, or Saratoga.”

~Jim Wright, U.S. Representative, The Coming Water Famine, 1966

Jim Wright made that statement 56 years ago and here we are 5 decades later and it’s still a dire situation. Where I live, here in California, we are currently in the middle of a severe drought so saving water is at the top of mind for many of us Californians but there are things we all can do that will make a difference when it comes to the water shortage.

As is the case with most environmental issues, it starts with us. It starts in our homes. What are you doing in your home to make this planet a healthier, safer, cleaner place?

  • Experts agree that the best way to help is to simply use less water. Conserve and realize that it’s not an infinite source. Be respectful of that fact; take it into consideration each time you use water for any of your daily activities. Don’t allow the water to run needlessly. Little things like turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth and taking shorter showers help. Even just a quick five minute shower uses 10 to 25 gallons of water. Can’t stand washing dishes like me? Good news if you have an energy star dishwasher, it uses 4 gallons per cycle while water running in your sink uses 4 gallons every two minutes.
  • Do not clean small loads of clothes. About 41 gallons of water is used per load in most washing machines. Fill ‘er up.
  • Make sure none of the faucets in your home have leaks. If they do, get them fixed!
  • No one loves a hot shower more than me. I’m not a bath girl but the feeling of the warm water cascading all over my body is relaxing and heavenly but taking shorter showers is important. Even just a quick 5 minute shower uses 10 to 25 gallons of water. Get clean and get out. And, dry bathe whenever possible.
  • On a daily basis, children and women around the world spend roughly 258 million hours each day collecting water. In developing countries they walk up to 6 hours EVERY day just to get water. Can you even imaging doing that each day Your donation to WaterDay.org  will help empower them with safe water and sanitation. Another way to help is buy Stella Artois beer. Each limited edition chalice sold equals 5 years of clean water.

“I really think we focus too much on ‘scarcity.’ Water is, and always has been, scarce. The truth is, we really need to go back to grade school Earth Science class and remember that water on the planet exists in an interconnected cycle.” ~ Alexandra Cousteau

10 Tips To Make Going Green Easy In 2020 #ReduceYourToxicLoad

I hope this shiny new decade is off to a fabulous start for you! There’s something very exciting about starting fresh with a brand new year and diving into a world of possibilities, isn’t there? With this being a new decade it feels there’s even more promise!

I am so ready for a phenomenal year, it got off to a great start with a weekend in Palm Springs where I attended Level Up Live, a fantastic business conference with Allison Maslan, CEO and Founder of Pinnacle Global Network and author of Scale Or Fail. It was a powerful weekend full of inspiration and valuable takeaways. If you are a business owner I highly recommend attending her next event. What a motivating way to start 2020!

How is your 2020 so far? Many of us have big plans when a new year begins making lofty resolutions we vow to achieve. Unfortunately, most falter by February because creating habits on our own isn’t easy.

I don’t necessarily make resolutions but it is a good time to make some positive changes. Mine is getting back to a regular yoga practice. I miss it.

New Year’s resolutions typically involve some type of health improvement, does yours? I recommend going green because living an eco friendly lifestyle reduces your toxic load which improves your health a great deal because toxicity levels in your system can wreak havoc on your health. The healthiest individuals make detoxing a natural part of their daily routine.

Your health and longevity are largely determined by your lifestyle, only about 25% is dictated by your genetics. One of the most important things that you can do to improve your health is to reduce your toxic load. This requires detoxing our personal care and beauty routines and our home environments. The good news, it’s really not difficult and I am here to help you do it.

A healthy, eco friendly lifestyle is not a luxury. Detoxing your lifestyle is simply not an option if you want to be healthy.

The truth is, we live in an extremely toxic world. Whether you are just beginning your green journey or you are already living a pretty clean life but want to go further, all steps to detoxing will improve your health. Period. Try this eco detox for 2020. Even small changes will make a difference.

  • Start your day with a detoxifying drink. A cup of warm water with the juice of 1 organic lemon will set you up with a healthy start to your day by helping to flush the kidneys, aid digestion, boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, balance pH levels and the acidity stimulates liver to produce acids that help detox the body… how about all those benefits without much work?! Oh and you’ll also get a nice dose of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin B and C and other antioxidants, which all help combat wrinkles savvy girls!
  • Sip your cuppa sustainably Another disposable item habit to break is coffee pods, 30 million go to the landfills each day. Start using reusable K-cups for Keurig. You’ll save money and help out the beautiful planet.
  • Ecofy your cleaning routine Use products that do not contain harmful toxins to clean your home, car, and office. Just like using non toxic personal care products, this is far healthier for the environment and your family, including your pets.
  • Steer clear of Bisphenol A I have written about the dangers of BPA in several posts over the years. It’s found in everything from plastic containers to the lining of canned foods to cash register receipts. BPA is problematic because it imitates estrogen so it disrupts our endocrine system and messes with hormones. It’s been associated with many cancers including breast cancer. The truth is, most plastic has estrogenic chemicals so it’s healthy to avoid plastic as much as possible.
  • Toss toxic air fresheners  Exposure even just once a week can increase your odds of developing asthma by as much as 71% and can contribute to an increase in pulmonary diseases. Plus there is no evidence that they disinfect the air in any way but research is showing that chemicals in these products harm us. Try Master Blaster, it eliminates odors and blasts stain (even tough laundry stains) or Unearthed room sprays.
  • Use cute reusable water bottles  You know sipping your daily h20 intake from plastic water bottles is no good because of the BPA and phthalates not to mention how horrible they are for the environment.

Being green might not have been easy for Kermit but it can be for you

  • Recycle  Every ton of paper we recycle, saves 17 trees, 7000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil so recycle it! About 40% of landfill waste is paper!
  • Use Less Water  Take shorter showers & turn off the water while brushing your teeth, washing your face and hands.
  • Use Clean Beauty & Personal Care Products  What goes on your body doesn’t just affect you and your health, they harm our precious environment. When you reduce your own personal exposure to toxins with clean beauty you reduce your contribution of dangerous chemicals getting back into our environment. Click here for a list of quality brands. Our government is not making sure our products are safe so we need to choose them wisely.
  • Steer Clear of Traditional Dry Cleaners  Even trace amounts of the commonly used solvent perchloroethylene [perc] has been labeled as a ‘likely human carcinogen’ by the EPA. Start patronizing green dry cleaners or don’t buy as much ‘dry clean only’ garments. You’ll save money and the environment. Women spend roughly $1500 a year on dry cleaning bills!
  • Here’s a bonus tip: DITCH TOXIC DEODORANT & ANTIPERSPIRANT! I’m sure you heard by now that they contain parabens (which mimic the body’s natural hormones increasing the risk of breast and other cancers) and aluminum. Both have been found in breast cancer tissue. Our underarms absorb even more than other areas of our skin. Want a safe, healthy alternative that actually works ALL day and night? You’ll find it here in my list of clean personal care products that I approve. My favorite is Pure Haven because it works.

There you have it, a new year’s detox that doesn’t require fasting or juicing. How about that? Pretty easy way to detox, right?!

Have You Heard Of Electrolyzed Water? A New Green Way To Clean

Guest Post conributed by Shannon Noble

The question regarding eco-friendly cleaning solutions and the perseverance of natural resources has bee a hot topic over the last few years. Luckily more and more people are coming to terms with the fact that they are responsible for preserving natural resources and have started seeking alternative methods for reducing the negative effects their actions have on the environment.droplets-217034_1280

It is a well-known fact that cleaning supplies contain toxic particles and their excessive use actually does more harm than good, especially indoors. The housekeeping industry is making huge steps towards adopting various eco-friendly cleaning strategies and one of them is cleaning with electrolyzed water.

First of all, let’s cast light on what exactly an electrolyzed water system is and why it is becoming a more and more widespread cleaning solution in facilties such as healthcare centers, kindergartens and entertainment venues

  • The electrolyzed water system generates a cleaning agent out of plain tap water, salt and electricity. This is an affordable and yet, effective way to keep large areas clean and it cuts down on commercial cleaning solutions and detergents

  • The cost for transportation is also significantly reduced as the electrolyzed water can be produced onsite. In most cases, the price for a gallon electrolyzed water is as low as 2 cents

  • As you have already presumed, no harsh chemicals are used during the process, which results in reduced carbon emissions.

  • Electrolyzed water has become widely used in some European countries as well as in Russia and Japan. It has vast applications ranging from cleaning swimming pools to disinfecting medical tools
  • Although it might sound strange at first, electrolyzed water kills bacteria and viruses through a scientific process known as electroporation which applies to a low-level field to viruses and bacteria creating “pores” in the membrane which allow bacterial cells to be broken down and eliminated
  • On the downside, the price of the water electrolysis unit is a bit high, but if you are in charge of keeping a large faculty clean, you will get your investment back in no more than a year. If you make estimates, you will see that you spend the same amount on buckets, mops, detergents and additional cleaning supplies
  • Finchley move out cleaners electrolyzed water cleaning method is suitable for food establishments as no foam is formed and no odor is produced

Some people consider the great properties of electrolyzed water too good to be true, but more and more owners embrace the opportunity to have their facilities bacteria-free and reduce the cleaning costs. Today, electrolyzed water is used for window cleaning, bathroom sanitizing, kitchen cleaning, machinery cleaning and many more.

Electrolyzed water is a wonderful eco-friendly cleaning approach that combines affordability, safety and efficiency. The technology enables every owner of a commercial building or a private property to go green, keep the facility clean and economize by eliminating the use of traditional cleaning supplies.

Eco Savvy ~ 5 Easy Things You Can Do To Detox Your Home

  • Get Those Windows Open  There are 10 times more pollutants inside our homes than there are outside! Open your windows at least 15 minutes a day, longer on nice days. This will help dilute the pollutants. I know this isn’t easy for those of you experiencing snow storms all season but do it whenever weather permits
  • Ditch Toxic Air Fresheners  Exposure even just once a week can increase your odds of developing asthma by as much as 71% and can contribute to an increase in pulmonary diseases. Plus there is no evidence that they disinfect the air in any way but research is showing that chemicals in these products harm us. Use an essential oil room diffuser or try John Desilvia‘s natural version instead: 2 T baking soda, 5 drops of essential oil, 2 C water in a spray bottle. Spraying 100% Eucalyptus oil can be effective too.

A 2006 study found that those with high blood levels of  1.4 dichlorobenze, commonly found in air fresheners were more likely to experience a decline in lung function

  • Have Sweet Eco Friendly Dreams Replace your bedding with organic sheets. Forget about thread count, sustainable organic bedding is beyond soft and comfortable, naturally. My kids sheets are made from Bamboo which is a great source. I’m sleeping on Pure Beech Sateen which is regenerated from the Beechwood trees of Europe, made from Modal they are luxuriously soft and contain no pesticides or toxic substances
  • Green Up Your Space With Pretty Plants  They are nature’s air purifiers that give natural oxygen and help keep the air clean. 1 plant per every 100 square feet in your home will help clean the air & produce more oxygen. Snake plant, Golden Pothos, English Ivy, mother-in-law, peacock, tri color, peace lily, bamboo, nest, fern, snake plant aka mother-in-law’s tongue, aloe vera and bamboo palm are good choices

Grab my free guide with my top tips to help you go green with ease: The Savvy Girl’s Guide To Eco Friendly Living. Implement the tips in this complimentary checklist and you’ll be a green movement rockstar.

  • Don’t Toss That Dryer Sheet In Instead, try dryer balls or use a ball of tin foil. Throw it in the dryer with your clothes to combat static cling without all the irritating toxic chemicals and perfumes in those dryer sheets. It can withstand the heat the way it does in the oven. Be sure to recycle it when you’re done with it, foil sits in landfills for years and years. And, of course, use non toxic laundry detergent!

Eco Friendly… it’s not just a buzz word, it’s a way of life

Do You Have A Fire Safety Plan & The Right Type Of Smoke Alarms In Your Home?

Temperatures reach 500 degrees within 3  –  4 minutes & 1000 degrees within 8

In the event of a fire in your home, do you have a fire safety plan in place? Jeff Rossen did a very important investigation for the Today Show that will help you come up with a good plan for your family. I was surprised by his findings.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Do you have the right type of smoke alarm? Fire alarms that are typically used in most homes do not always work properly, if at all.

The most popular type of smoke alarm uses ionization technology, 90% of the homes in America have them.

The ionization technology works well in a fire with fast flames but they don’t always sound fast enough in a fire that starts with smoldery smoke.

These types of fires can fill your home with toxic gases while you sleep and this alarm goes off when it’s already too late.

60 – 80% of victims die from smoke and chemical inhalation, not burns

Texas A & M scientist Don Russell has performed hundreds of tests that proves this. He has found that smoke detectors using photo electric technology work far faster in a smokey fire. Tests run by the government also show that they go off much sooner in a smokey fire.

The ionization detector went off 20 minutes later and in many fires, people would not be able to get out safely at that point. In some real life cases, the ionization detector never even went off and people parished.

Companies primarily sell the ionization detectors because they cost less money to make. Russell says they will only respond when the government pressures them.

In the mean time, if you want to keep your family as safe as possible, experts recommend installing a photo electric detector in addition to the one that uses ionization technology or install a duel detector that uses both technologies.

With the holidays upon us this is a good idea. Lots of fires are started because of holiday lights, candles and such. Remember that tragedy in New York a few Christmases ago? A mom lost all 3 of her children and her parents in a house fire. Devastating.
