BPA Is The New Nicotine

There has been more bad news about Bisphenol A (BPA) than just about any other substance over the last few years but some people still are unaware of just how hazardous it is. Several studies have sited the dangers of BPA and it’s harmful effects on our health even at low doses. It imitates estrogen so it disrupts our endocrine system and messes with our hormones. It’s been associated with breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, premature puberty, neurological problems in infants, male sexual dysfunction, miscarriage, fertility problems, obesity, liver abnormalities and diabetes.Recent Studies State Chemical In Plastic Liquid Containers Contain Tox

Even the American Medical Association (AMA) has reported that it officially recognizes BPA as an endocrine-disrupting agent and they are prompting manufacturers to warn consumers by clearly labeling products containing it. They were also quick to back the decision to ban the sale of products that contain BPA for babies.

It’s widely known that BPA is used in plastic but it might surprise you to find out that it is also in receipts and dollar bills among other things. Yep, just by touching those items your body is absorbing it. Lovely. It also leaches into food inside of cans because the inner lining of canned foods contains BPA. It gets into our food even without being heated.

It’s frustrating to believe you are making a healthy dinner for your family only to serve up the cancer causing compound. An interesting study was conducted last year by Silent Spring Institute and the Breast Cancer Fund. They found that when families ate fresh foods and avoided food in cans and food packaged in plastic for 3 days their BPA levels dropped on average by a whopping 60 percent! Canada no longer allows manufacturers to use it, it’s time for us to do the same.

193There are alternatives, Janelle Sorensen, freelance environmentalist and former CCO, Healthy Child, Healthy World says, “Eden Foods uses a safer material and has agreed to make their ‘trade secrets’ public. The key to successful change is finding feasible alternatives. We have those in hand so with sustained consumer pressure, it shouldn’t be too long before we see the end of BPA used in food and beverage products.” I buy Eden Foods almost exclusively when buying canned foods because of this. The Breast Cancer Fund launched their ‘Cans Not Cancer’ campaign to urge manufacturers to uses a safer alternative in the lining of canned foods. Eden Foods does it why can’t everyone else?!

5 Things To Try That Will Energize & Motivate You

Try A New Sport I recently began taking tennis lessons with a few girlfriends and we are having a serious blast! Getting out in the fresh air and using your brain to actually learn the skill of a new sport is invigorating. We cart our kids around to all of their sporting events and practices, why not us?!

Volunteer It’s not news that doing good for others and giving of one’s time benefits the giver in many significant ways. Choose a cause that is near and dear to your heart and find out what type of help you can offer, even if it’s just 1 hour a week.

Get Plans On the Calendar Everyone is guilty of it, we run into someone we know and ‘talk’ about how we should get together. Pick up the phone, call one of those people you’ve been ‘meaning to make plans with,’ set a date, choose a venue and go have a good time!

Stop Wasting Time As busy as we are, we all do it to some extent. Take a look at some of the things that occupy your time and drop something that is holding you back, having a negative effect or just not furthering your cause.

Challenge Yourself It’s easy to get comfortable in our lives and just plug away day to day following the same routine. Is there something that you have always been tempted to try but were too scared… sky diving, bull riding, race car driving, running a marathon, learning an instrument, taking an exotic vacation, getting a tattoo… but fear is holding you back? Why not do it? Even if it’s something small, as Maya Angelou says, “do one thing every day that scares you.”

Healthy Bites ~ 5 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Health

200455438-001

  • Go bananas. They’re full of potassium which has many health benefits including lowering blood pressure, stress and anxiety as well as reducing your risk of stroke. Bananas also have resistant starch, a type of fiber that is not absorbed so neither are as many calories and it’s been shown to improve insulin sensitivity
  • Swimsuit season is here so there is no time like the present to kick it into gear and get into shape. Looking hot in a bikini is good motivation but an even better reason? Staying in shape is good cancer prevention. Being sedentary and over weight causes just as many cancer deaths as cigarette smoking! Research strongly suggests that fat encourages tumors to grow so hop on that treadmill while you watch the next episode of The Real Housewives
  • Feeling a little sluggish during the day? You might not be drinking enough water. Dehydration can make you feel tired and it may slow your metabolism down. Stay hydrated and you’ll be more alert. Make it more palatable by adding a few slices of lemon, lime or orange
  • Germs Like hard surfaces such as light switches, door knobs and remote controls so wipe them of urlregularly, especially after someone in your family has been ill. Research has found that one third of the surfaces in hotel rooms were still covered in germs a day later, even after the room was cleaned. Eeww. Good reason to pack some wipes.
  • Are you looking to add more fiber and omega-3 fatty acids to your diet? Sprinkle ground flax seeds on yogurt, cereal, smoothies, nut butters and add some to your pancake and cookie mixes

Healthy Child Healthy World… When Did You Wake up?

urlHealthy Child Healthy World is a valuable resource for creating a healthy, safe home and life. Thanks to them, millions are waking up to the risks that toxic chemicals pose. James and Nancy Chuda founded this wonderful organization after learning that the cancer that ended the life of their 4 year old daughter was most likely caused by a pesticide that Nancy was exposed to during her pregnancy.

Part of their mission is to bring awareness of toxic risks to parents and to encourage healthier lifestyle choices. I am extremely impressed by this organization, the work they do is so important. I am passionate about living a healthy, toxic-free lifestyle so I love how they have truly empowered and enlightened the public and helped change things for the better. But it’s an ongoing uphill battle, this short video will give you an idea of what they are trying to accomplish. I hope you’ll join me in spreading the word by tweeting this, posting it on your Facebook wall and sending it to your friends and family.

I woke up about 7 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest. I hit the snooze button at first but I’m wide awake now. When did you wake up?

Testimonials

I signed up for the course to educate myself on how to make smarter choices about the products I use on myself and my family. Prior to taking the class, I was frustrated with all of the misleading information out there. There are many products I was using that claimed they were ‘clean’ when in fact they were green washed. The class taught me how to outsmart this type of marketing and purchase safer products by providing me with an understanding of the specific chemicals to avoid. I can now look at the back of a label and recognize these harmful chemicals. As a registered nurse, I found value in her application of the endocrine system because it emphasized just how these chemicals can be dangerous to our bodies. Kelly helped me gain a much better understanding of clean products, how to protect myself and my family, and inspired me to spread the word. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to create a healthier lifestyle. Since taking it, I have switched over many products I was using and now feel so much better about putting them on my kids knowing they are clean.

~Shannon E., Pediatric ICU Nurse & mom of 2

Even if you think you are a well-informed, up to date or a life long health and wellness zealot you will learn something new and informative from Kelly Bonanno’s ‘The Savvy Girl’s Guide To Organic Beauty.’ This is an eye-opening course exploring and breaking down the safest and most toxic products, ingredients, formulas and chemicals found in the everyday products. Kelly cuts to the chase and takes the confusion out of our beauty, household and health related consumer products in a clear, concise manner. I guarantee you will learn something you didn’t know before. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it.

~Eva S., Creative Director/Writer/Producer

“I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your talk during the wellness event on Friday! You are SUCH an amazing speaker!! Because of you, I went out and bought healthier deodorant and am committed to buying less-toxic household cleaners, lotion, and shampoo/conditioner next time I run out! I will DEFINITELY keep my ear to the ground for businesses that might be interested in a workshop!!” ~Courtney L., Keller Williams

I was struggling with allergic reactions on my skin caused by something in the products I was using. During the course, I learned how toxic everyday cosmetics and cleaning products can be. One thing that I liked was learning specifically which products I was using that could be causing my skin rashes. Overall, I found the experience very educational and helpful. It raised my awareness of products that I should avoid. I am better because I was able to use alternative products that Kelly recommended, thus avoiding the products that were causing the skin rash. Now I feel great and my skin has cleared up. I no longer have to rely on harmful steroid prescription ointments to relieve the skin rashes. Kelly, thank you so much for solving this aggravating problem with your knowledge of the harmful ingredients in everyday cosmetics and household cleaning products!

~Tracy D., Founder, Tracy Naturals

“Gaining knowledge of, what is harmful to myself and those I love, then avoiding it as much as possible. Following people like you, who put in the time and effort to know what is harmful and how to recognize it for ourselves, is a huge asset. It’s a daunting task!! I appreciate all you do. Thank you. ??”

~Karen A., member of Savvy Girl’s Organic World

Kelly’s course should be on the ‘must do’ list for anyone looking for a place to begin their journey to wellness by adopting a non-toxic lifestyle. I came into the course with a fair amount of knowledge about a toxin free lifestyle, but this course took me to a new level of understanding and awareness about the issue in all areas of my life. Kelly’s passion is real, her delivery is upbeat, and the information she imparts can be life changing. Not only does ‘The Savvy Girl’s Guide To Organic Beauty’ provide valuable information on the bad stuff, it provides an impressive list of alternative product choices to help you get a quick start on going non-toxic! Kelly has done the work for you and will even offer you concierge service to help you create a plan to eliminate the unsafe chemicals from your home. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and sign up for this course!

~Tamra G., Owner, The Studio of Tamra Glaser & mom of 2

“Kelly, thank you so so much for today! You were amazing and gave us all so much great information. My Aunt Diane just texted me that she ordered some 100% Pure products and that she is noticing a lot of her products have “fragrance” and other toxins. Today couldn’t have been more perfect. I’ve received so much positive response from the event. I truly can’t thank you enough!” ~Cassy N., mom of 2

I signed up for this course because I was struggling with knowing which products were truly pure and organic. Kelly taught me which ingredients to avoid and why. I feel so empowered now!

~Marianna S., Mom of 4

Transform your health with the power and peace of mind of an eco friendly lifestyle.

I help busy women who want to go green, clean their beauty routine, get toxins away from their kids, reduce their body’s toxic burden, have glowing skin & more energy but are pressed for time and feel overwhelmed by the thought of one more thing to do!

Are you wondering whether or not I can help you? If you are in one of the following situations, then the answer is a resounding yes! Contact me if any of these scenarios sound familiar:

Melissa is pregnant for the first time and beginning realizing that the products she uses in her home to clean her house are highly toxic, She is afraid of exposing her unborn child and does not want him living in a toxic environment after he arrives.

Pam is a stay-at-home-mom who has been so focused on raising her children and keeping up with the demands of an extremely busy lifestyle that she has put less attention on herself and now she doesn’t feel very good about herself. She’s finally at a place where she’s ready to make a change. She wants to get the toxins away from her kids. She wants to feel better, look better and have more energy but does not want to use products with toxins because she has read about the adverse health affects.

Michelle is overwhelmed. She knows there are toxins in most everyday products and realizes that she should make some changes but she just doesn’t know where to start. She’s not sure about what products to use. She needs guidance from me to alleviate the overwhelm of going green and living eco friendly.

Alexis is a 30 something career woman who is beautiful, loves make up, gets her hair done and colored but she’s also pretty health minded and has concerns about the products she’s using on her body and her hair. She wants to clean them up at least a little bit but she doesn’t want to give up glamour. She’s a make up junkie, a product junkie who likes to look hot, sexy and beautiful.

Sandra is resistant to change. She is not onboard but is curious. She likes the products she is using but wants a healthy routine so she’d like to explore some options about potentially making a few switches. She doesn’t want to go all out changing every single one of her personal care, beauty products or household products, she just wants to dip her toe in, learn more and take baby steps by making a few small changes.

Danielle is a savvy woman. She knows conventional products have a harmful ingredients but she wonders just how clean her products really are. She’s heard of greenwashing and she’s concerned that perhaps her products are not as clean as the companies claim. She wants to make sure that the products she uses from this point forward are truly green, clean and healthy. She wants to ditch anything but claims to be safe and organic but actually has harmful chemicals.

Cassandra is a cancer survivor. She’s a strong woman. She has she beat it and she wants to change her lifestyle habits and live as clean and healthy as possible. She realizes that her illness was not her fault but she also realizes that only 10% of cancers are genetic. She knows our environment and our products can harm us and she wants to do everything she can and her power to stay healthy.

Which Type Of Cookware Is The Safest?

Is your cookware hazardous to your family’s health? How we cook our food is just as important as what we serve. We’ve all cooked with non-stick pots and pans. They are easy to use and easy to clean but most of them really aren’t safe. The substance that gives them the slippery surface, PFOA is toxic. If you’re like me you tossed your non-stick pans when this first made big news a few years ago.6974973271_00126e35e8_c

PFOA has been linked to birth defects, several cancers including kidney and testicular, thyroid problems, weakened immune systems, miscarriages and other serious illnesses and conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did a study on PFOA and discovered that it could be found in in nearly 98% of the population. Another study done by  the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2007 revealed that PFOA was detected in 100% of the newborns that were examined. That’s frightening. Teflon and other non-stick surfaces are particularly hazardous if there are scratched or nicked in any way. It’s not just pots and pans, cake pans muffin tins, rice cookers, etc. can also have PFOA.

The Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] requested that manufacturers reduce production of these types of pots and pans by 95% by 2010. Moving forward, they are requesting that companies stop making their existing non-stick coating; the goal is to reach a total elimination of its production by 2015.

There are safe alternatives, we don’t need to be exposing our families to the hazards of non-stick cookware. Some think that aluminum and stainless steel cookware are good options, however, they could potentially leach metals into your food. They’re still better than teflon. Certain substances are not toxic unless they’re heated but the whole purpose of using cookware is of course to heat food. Stainless Steel is a combination of many metals including nickel, chromium and molybdenum.

It’s not always easy to find safe, quality cookware. It can be pricey and sometimes the safer non-stick material doesn’t work that well or last long, it’s a bit of trial and error. The best choices are ceramic, porcelain, enameled and cast iron. Amazon has a wide variety. I really like Ecolution Bliss Hydro Ceramic.  Orgreenic and The Green Pan are pretty good. I’ve found them at Target, Costco, Bed, Bath & Beyond and I’ve bought a few at discounted prices from stores like HomeGoods, Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Do You Know Where To Get Your Vitamin B12?

Guest Post by Mishka Thomas

There are many popular dietary B12 sources, mostly animal-based products. Upon researching these food sources, you have probably read about vitamin-fortified breakfast cereals on many mainstream lists and supermarkets. But are cereals actually a health-smart way to fight off vitamin B12 deficiency and other lack in nutrients?

Do you suffer from anxiety? A vitamin B12 deficiency could be the cause.

Breakfast cereals are not a healthy food at all – and this holds true whether you are taking about vitamin B12-fortified varieties or not. The highly processed grains in the cereals immediately break down to sugar in your body and stimulate production of insulin. It may also be interesting for you to know that children and infants do not fare well consuming these breakfast staples that are deceptively marketed as healthy and beneficial.

So what B12 sources should you stick to? Natural ones, of course!

• Fish and Seafood Certain types of seafood provide good amounts of B12.  Be sure to buy your fish from clean sources so you can avoid eating contaminated fish. This is the result of industrial processes that have already contaminated the oceans and seas with toxins like mercury. The jury is out on whether or not he risks linked to mercury-laced seafood outweigh any potential health benefit. Extra caution is necessary if you are pregnant or have a growing family. Methyl mercury is highly toxic to the developing brains and nervous function of infants and children. Do your best to find uncontaminated fish.

•Chicken This is another natural B12 source. However, stick with organic chicken because conventionally raised chicken may contain antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

•Beef and Beef Liver Keep in mind, though, that grass-fed beef is highly preferable to the grain-fed kind. Besides, it tastes better.

•Milk Raw milk is a good bet, especially if you are able to get Certified Grade A milk that is guaranteed clean and produced under government watch. Otherwise, make sure it’s organic.

• Eggs These are not only rich in vitamin B12, but also considered among the healthiest all- around foods in the world. My first choice would food-eggsbe to buy your eggs from a free-range pasture farm. If this is not possible, buy free-range organic eggs from the grocery. What you should avoid are omega-3 added eggs, which are actually less healthy than regular egg varieties.

• Pork While it is another natural source of vitamin B12, pork is not highly recommended. Pigs are scavengers in nature, and they will consume almost anything. This makes them susceptible to parasites and retroviruses, which have quite a huge chance of making it into pork-based food supplies. There is simply no assurance they these viruses have been killed even if you have efficiently cooked the meat. If you consume pork, your safest bet is the meat of organically fed pigs. It is also crucial that you avoid eating sausage, bacon, and other processed pork treats.

How about if you’re a vegetarian or vegan? You may want to consider a  B12 supplement. This will help you keep your B12 in a positive balance and give your tissues sufficient B12 for their requirements. Even if you eat meat and eggs, you may still be deficient. A deficiency in B12 levels can cause problems including extreme fatigue, dementia and permanent damage to nervous tissue if left untreated. Symptoms can be vague so so ask your doctor to give you a simple blood test to check your levels, particularly if you are experiencing inexplicable fatigue.

It is important that you source your supplement from a reliable manufacturer. You should take note that a B12 supplement should be free of sugar, wheat, starch, yeast, salt, gluten, eggs, soy, dairy, stimulants and artificial flavors and colors. Vitamin B12 deficiency is a real and serious threat that you should guard yourself against.
