My Struggle With Postpartum Anxiety and Breastfeeding

#NationalBreastfeedingMonth

Are you a breastfeeding mom or were you at one time, a breastfeeding mom who found breastfeeding so damn hard you felt like giving up? I had an incredibly difficult time coupled with postpartum anxiety. Postpartum issues and breastfeeding difficulties are more common than you might think. In fact, in my experience, more common than not. I hope my story helps you.

Most women I’ve talked with had some type of hardship surrounding their breastfeeding experience. Many have such a sucky (no pun intended) time they just give up. For better or worse, I persevered.

Both of my pregnancies were great but I suffered postpartum anxiety after my first. I’m far removed from that point in my life but I remember it like it was yesterday. Perhaps you had a similar experience and will relate to my story. One thing I know for sure, if you did or if you are currently, you are not alone.

Mommy & Me play group with 6 month old Joey

As tough as it was, I never lost sight of the fact that I was blessed with a healthy, thriving, fun baby who allowed me to experience a love I never knew existed.

That little newborn turned 18 in July. Last week, we moved him into his college dorm. The cliché time flies.. nothing could be more true. Seems like yesterday he was my stubborn but sweet high energy toddler running me ragged, cracking me up and giving me the best cuddles in the world.

I wanted to share my own difficult breastfeeding and postpartum story for years but it’s not easy for me to open up and be vulnerable – not to use a totally overused term but I’m not the emotional type. I feel strong emotions but sharing them is out of my comfort zone. I’m the type that gets angry rather than cries but my anger is swift and fades fast, I take after my dad in that way.

This was not the case after my first son was born, emotions were heightened. I was weepy, sad, confused, irritable, guilt-ridden, lonely… an emotional sleep deprived wreck.

We hear about postpartum depression but postpartum anxiety is more common than you might think. The 4th trimester is real. I didn’t realize this at the time but that is what I was going through – 4th trimester struggles. I felt very alone and inadequate.

There simply weren’t enough resources for new moms. Fortunately today there are many. If I knew then what I know now things would be different. Now that I’m a wellness coach that focuses very heavily on self-care with my clients and myself I would’ve told that new mom, you need to take care of yourself and seek help.

If you’re going through that or ever do in the future please make your well-being a priority. Believe me, I know how difficult it is when you have a newborn, you barely have time to shower but practicing a little self-care each day will help you. The fact that self-care is a non-negotiable for our well-being is the reason I created my free Virtual Self-Care Retreat. If you’d like help fitting in some easy self-care, you can sign up here.

I’m not good at asking for help which was a big part of the problem. But I didn’t have much choice, at the time my mom was very ill with rheumatoid arthritis and my mother-in-law did not live nearby. I had left my well-paying network TV job at CBS so money was tight.

I distinctly remember thinking I am going to write about this one day because I cannot possibly be the only mom going through this. Facebook didn’t exist and blogs weren’t nearly what they are now. I thought I’d do it sooner but all things happen at the right time. I share my story because since then I’ve met many women who have been in the same exact boat. If you have a similar experience, I want you to know you are not alone or crazy like I thought I was.

20% of women in the U.S. suffer from anxiety and mood disorders before or after pregnancy and it can last up to 3 years postpartum. A national survey conducted by Every Mother Counts, Seleni Institute, Peanut, Motherly and Maven, revealed that the majority of women reported experiencing both depression and anxiety.

I shared my story two years ago in this video…

It was of utmost importance to me to be able to feed my baby the almighty breastmilk to give him the zillions of immune boosting health benefits, particularly being such a wellness advocate. And frankly, I figured it would be easier than having to make bottles and drag them along and certainly cheaper, breastmilk is free.

For a list of top toxins to avoid to welcome baby into a healthy home and pass fewer toxins through your breast milk click here.

In the video, a live stream I did in my private Facebook group (you are welcome to join), I share that I unknowingly nearly starved my son for the first few days. He latched on just fine so I had no idea no milk was coming out. I did everything possible including hiring a lactation consultant.

I also talk about the circus it was and the rigors I went through weighing him, nursing him, weighing him again to see what measly little milk I might’ve given him… then making a bottle to supplement after which I had to pump to try to encourage my mammary glands to start making milk on their own and hopefully increase milk production.

The whole process was so freaking long by the time I was done feeding him it was practically time to feed him again! Plus, I was really bad at breastfeeding. I could not do it in public discreetly, boobs everywhere. I now realize why wet nurses were popular at a point in time.

I share my best advice to new moms and reveal how I finally, after months of screwed up sleep patterns, got him to sleep through the night and become a good napper.

I literally thought I would never be able to leave the house. I was almost delirious. The sleep deprivation was brutal. That coupled with the postpartum anxiety I was experiencing and lack of support made me so damn irritable.

If I was going through this today I would reach out to Mindy Werth of Aunty Mindy. She is a kind, loving and knowledgable Family Consultant specializing in: Fertility & Pre-Natal, Birth & Postpartum, Infant Feeding & Family Development, Gentle Sleep Guide. If you are having any type of postpartum difficulties or just want some help, you can find her on Instagram @auntymindyconsultant

Prevention Is Key When It Comes To Keeping Your Beautiful Breasts Healthy

15 Things You Can Do To PREVENT Breast Cancer

Only 10% of all cancers are genetic, even breast cancer is not usually caused by a genetic predisposition. A mere 15% of breast cancer patients actually have a family history. We must look at lifestyle habits in order to prevent this terrible disease ~ what we are eating, breathing and what we are putting on our skin.

  • Eat less red meat. A study published in the BMJ that followed 89, over a 20 year period revealed that women who had an average of 1.5 servings of red meat each day had a 22% higher chance of breast cancer over women who limited their red meat intake to once a week. With each addition daily serving of red meat, the risk appeared to increase by 13%
  • Avoid parabens. You know how I feel about parabens if you’ve been reading my blog for a while. Use cosmetics and sunscreen that are formulated without them because parabens mimic the body’s natural hormones increasing the risk of breast and other cancers. They are found in 99% of breast cancer tissue samples.
  • Hit the gym, lace up those running shoes , pop in a work out DVD – choose some type of physical activity because just 30 minutes of exercise each day reduces your chance of getting breast cancer. Plus exercise boosts t-cells that help your immune system work at full capacity
  • Stay at a healthy weight. Exercise also helps keep your body fat percentage in check. Too much fat on our bodies creates hormones, particularly estrogen, which has been found to stimulate cancer
  • Garlic, turmeric and cruciferous vegetables including brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and bok choy are good breast cancer fighters because they bind estrogen in your GI tract
  • A study showed that drinking 3 cups of green tea a day can reduce risk of breast cancer by 50%

Survival rates are at an all-time high for those with breast cancer. In the last 20 years, there has been a 30% reduction in mortality and over 90% of breast cancer patients survive after 5 years with early diagnosis.

  • Steer clear of Bisphenol A. I have written about the dangers of BPA in several posts. It’s found in everything from plastic containers to the lining of canned foods to cash register reciepts. BPA is problematic because it imitates estrogen so it disrupts our endocrine system and messes with hormones. It’s been associated with many cancers including breast cancer
  • Choose lean protein. Replace those red meat meals with nuts, beans, organic chicken and low mercury fish such as wild caught salmon
  • Pesticides can also affect the way your hormones react so buy organic when possible, use green cleaning products and stay away from hand sanitizers & soaps containing the endocrine disruptor triclosan. This cousin to agent orange is classified as a pesticide
  • Ask your doctor about taking the active form of vitamin D3 with K, 1000 iu’s a day may slash your risk of breast cancer up to 50%

Approximately 20 – 30% of breast cancers recur. The most common places it metastasizes are the bone, lungs, liver and brain

  • logo - CopyHER-2 is a rare but aggressive form of the disease. Another study found that eating lots of raw salad veggies dropped the risk of developing it by close to 35%
  • Curb your alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day. Studies show that over imbibing on a regular basis increases the risk factor
  • Breastfeed. It’s been shown to lower risk and it boosts infants health and immune system
  • Know your family history. While Only 15% of breast cancer patients  have a family history, if you do, your risk is higher so you need to know and take precautions
  • Get screened. Early detection is the key. Be sure to conduct monthly self exams and seek proper screening based on your age group and family history. You may need an ultrasound or sonogram in addition to a mammogram. The most effective type of mammography is the Genius 3D which has been found to detect 41% more invasive cancers and is proven to detect cancer 15 months earlier. Tell your doctor you’d like that one, it’s available in every state.
  • This is a bonus tip but perhaps one of the most important: For the love of all that’s good in the world, DITCH THE TOXIC DEODORANT & ANTIPERSPIRANT! Parabens and Aluminum have been found in breast cancer tissue. Want a safe, healthy alternative that actually works ALL day and night? You’ll find it here.                                                                                                                                                                                 *Please share this info ~ Tweet this, post on FB & Google+, Pin it & forward to all the women and men in your life, yes, men can get breast cancer too*

It is beyond time to put a stop to all the abhorrent Pinkwashing that goes on every October. Raising awareness for breast cancer research and prevention is important, I applaud companies that raise real funds. HOWEVER, isn’t it horrendously hypocritical of certain companies to sell products with ingredients that have been shown to CAUSE BREAST CANCER?!12038271_10153703383370982_5382164450670151028_n

Everywhere you turn in October companies are Pinkwashing us by claiming to be in support of breast cancer research while using ingredients that are mammary carcinogens, or carcinogenic contaminants that behave as endocrine disrupting compounds in our bodies, causing hormonal imbalance. As the Gerson Institute calls it, ‘carcinogens for the cure.’ True that.

“Pinkwashing – verb 1. the sale of items containing known carcinogens, while marketing these products in support of breast cancer awareness 2. also, capitalizing on the promotion of breast cancer prevention when only concerned about bottom line profit margin.”

It’s said that Evelyn Lauder’s dream was to end breast cancer. Why doesn’t the company jump off the breast cancer awareness bandwagon and honor her memory by reformulating their products WITHOUT harmful cancer causing ingredients?! L’Oreal, Proctor & Gamble and many others do it too. How do they sleep at night?!

According to the Breast Cancer Fund, which is doing amazing work in the name of prevention, “thousands of chemicals linked to breast cancer in scientific studies.”

Avon’s part in all of this is perplexing. They raise millions with their walk, have created a “Center of Excellence” in breast care and claim the mission of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Care Program at San Francisco General Hospital is to ‘provide comprehensive breast care, education and research in a compassionate and culturally sensitive environment.’

WHY, then, do their products contain MANY known CARCINOGENS??!!  The Avon 2 in 1 Cleanser is a NINE on the EWG database & has TEN carcinogens. Fucking insane.

Interested in a site that actually helps patients? Various companies offer patients free items such as scarves, make up, house cleaning, hats, wigs, etc. Breast cancer survivor Bethany Kandell created Breatcancerfreebies.com where patients can go to find items they can receive. You can make a donation on the site as well.

Paradise On The High Seas

The day my kids go back to school is always a little sad for me. I like enjoying the lazy days of summer with them. Having their energy in the house is something I do not take for granted.

We sure had a fun summer. The highlight was our Carribean cruise with my husband’s entire family. I am very grateful to my generous father-in-law for giving us such an amazing experience. It’s the vacation I always dreamed of having. There were 18 of us! My boys had a blast with all their cousins. It was a very special family vacation full of fun times, exploring wonderful cities, creating life long memories…

Learn The Facts & Take A Stand Against Child Abuse & Neglect

5 children a day die from child abuse and neglect in this country #FiveTooMany. 80% of those children are under the age of 4. Sadly, that number is growing, 15 years ago it was 3 children a day.

What’s worse is that there are actually 3 times more children than that being killed at the hands of their abuser because this statistic does not account for all of the cases that go unrecorded.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

There are several organizations working hard to help children. Child Help has been dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect and helping its victims since 1959 . The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children provides necessary resources and information to parents, victims and law enforcement.

PROTECT is a national association providing political strength and leadership for the protection of abused, exploited, and neglected children. Your time or financial assistance will be put to good use with any of these organizations.

baby washing her faceHelp Spread This is raising awareness by encouraging those on Twitter to donate 1 tweet a day in an effort to stop child abuse. Another easy way to help is visiting Click to Give, ad money raised will go to Child Help.

It is estimated that there are 3 times more incidents of child abuse than the 3.3 million cases reported each year

Writing this post was difficult. The images I saw and the stories I read about innocent little children who need love and nurturing but get instead get brutalized moved me to tears.

  • Approximately 60% of child fatalities that are caused by mistreatment are not listed as such on their death certificates
  • Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime
  • About 80% of 21 year olds that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder
  • Up to two-thirds of people being treated for drug abuse report being neglected or abused when they were children
  • More than 90% of victims are acquainted with their abuser in some way
  • The vicious cycle of abuse continues as about 30% of those abused and neglected will go on to abuse their own children

Please seek help if you need it. It is available for both victims and abusers. Send this to your friends, post it on Facebook and tweet it so we can bring awareness and potentially save lives.

Jackson is one of those people that others naturally gravitate to. His infectious cheerful manner, gentle spirit and great sense of humor draws people in.

He views the world with an innovative and resourceful eye, always surprising and intriguing us. He’s super fun, a bit of a class clown, but on the honor roll with straight As 🙂 #proudmom

♥ I am truly blessed to be his mommy ♥

Happy Birthday to all of Jackson’s fellow Pisces! Here is your horoscope for this week…

“This week’s astrology brings out your best and worst. At best, you will feel inspired, motivated by the highest principles and prepared to give your all for something or someone you love. At worst, you could be in a puddle of doubt, torn between your greatest hopes and deepest fears. And when in doubt, pause. If you are indeed facing a disappointment or rejection this is not the right moment to try to sort it; you may be able to gain clarity in the future, even reach a better outcome, but for now emotions are running too high and distance is required…”

Offering Gratitude To Our Veterans With A Special Salute To My Father ♥

“On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free”
 ~Dan Lipinski

I am deeply grateful to these brave men and women for their service. I would especially like to honor my father, Jake Harper, a true American hero who served in World War II, receiving three Bronze Stars and a special medal for D-day.

My Dad ♥

My Dad ♥

My dad was in the 121st Engineer Combat Battalion of the United States Army and battled in 3 major special series campaigns including D-Day where he was in the 2nd wave of American units to storm the beaches in Normandy.

He lost a lot of friends that day and there was extensive damage to their equipment but they persevered and the division went on to receive several awards for their performance during the invasion.

My sister took him to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. the weekend it opened in 2004 and he saw his name listed. It meant a lot to him, he told us it’s a weekend he’ll never forget. His name also appears on a tribute to WWII soldiers in a cemetery near Omaha Beach in France. I am very proud of my father. As you might imagine, he had some amazing stories. He passed away just last year, I miss him dearly.

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave”  ~Elmer Davis

Our service men and women and their families make great sacrifices. This country owes them a debt of gratitude.
