Celebrate Social Media Day By Unplugging

Unplug. It’s Good For Your Health

What do hand shakes, meteors, ice cream sodas and social media have in common? Today is the ‘national day’ for each. The group at Mashable.com created Social Media Day to ‘recognize the digital revolution.’ Social networks are at our finger tips, literally.  They’re fun, convenient and helpful. They help distribute a lot of important information, make it easy to stay connected with people and promote our businesses.

imgresI get it and I like it but there is no substitute for spending time with friends and family in person. Unplugging gives you a chance to do that and it gives your eyes and brain a much needed rest. There are plenty of reports that show we are addicted to our devices. It’s estimated that 56% of Americans 12 and over has at least one social profile and 46 million of us check our social services and media sites more than a few times every day.

Celebrate National Social Media Day… go tweet, you tube it, click on those deals,  like stuff, Pin stuff… as if we don’t already whoop it up in the social mediashpere on a daily (and for some, hourly) basis or even every other minute (you know who you are you serial posters!)
But then, unplug. Make plans to see friends face-to-face for some real human contact and cultivate those relationships. Scores of studies show how important social relationships are for our well being. How am I spending Social Media Day? We’re having a BBQ with friends for some live socializing and good old fashioned face time! And some good old fashioned cocktailing.
